Why IBC?

HowStuffWorks - It's one of those questions that doesn't really have an answer, but requires some sort of explanation.

Depending on your point-of-view, it's either nobody, or everybody. In reality, there are some big corporate telecoms brands in the background, without whom nothing would happen, so do they own part of it as a result? There are "caretakers" who administer the internet, and ensure it doesn't descend into chaos and anarchy? Are they more than just rules makers and keepers of the peace?

Has LCD display production peaked?

FT.com - If reports coming out the Far East are true, we could be seeing the start of a decline in demand for LCD displays.

LG Display and Samsung have enjoyed healthy profits of late, but both are predicting a 10% cut in production from August. The world's biggest LCD manufacturer, AU Optronics (AUO), is making similar noises.

Analysts say the problem lies in an oversupply of panels at a time when the global economic downturn is expected to dent consumer demand for computers and flat screen TVs. Consumer electronic groups have responded by cutting orders for flat panels, triggering a slide in panel prices.

Most in the industry share the view that the current weakness reflects inventory adjustments by downstream electronics companies, rather than a dramatic fall in demand for TVs and other electronic goods by consumers.

More IBC 3-D, OK?

Following the success of last year's live HD link to LA for a chat with with Director Robert Zemeckis, IBC's Technical and Big Screen teams are taking the concept further for 2008.

Not only have they secured another Hollywood legend for this year's interview, you'll be watching the whole thing in stunning digital 3-D. This is something of a first, and another feather in IBC's Big Screen cap.

Jeffery Katzenberg's Dreamworks Animation is at the forefront of stereoscopic 3-D production. Indeed, the company has boldly committed to producing all its output from 2009 on exclusively in 3-D. Pioneering stuff.

No doubt Katzenberg will be pressed on topics such as why they have been so bold, what processes and technologies they've put in place to make it work for them, and can any other award top the IBC International Honour For Excellence he's receiving this year?

As if that's not enough, after, I'm sure, some protracted negotiations behind the scenes, the Big Screen team have also secured a copy of 'Journey 3-D', directed by Eric Brevig, and starring Brendan Fraser.

It's acknowledged as the first major live-action 3-D movie of the modern era (with apologies to U2 and Hannah Montana), and will surely pack the RAI Auditorium when it's shown at 18.30 on Monday, 15 September.
